Washington County Department of Housing Services
Introduction
At its inception in 1970, the Housing Authority of Washington County subsidized a total of 490 units throughout Washington County. Presently, the Department of Housing Services carries on the Housing Authority's original mission and provides subsidy to over 2,600 households through the Section 8 Rental Assistance Programs, and another 307 households through Public, Farm Home and Specialty Housing.
Between 1990 and 2000 alone, the average assistance payment made by the Department on behalf of low income families increased 92%, from $265 to $443. The number of people assisted through federally funded assistance programs has also increased over 100% in the last 10 years.
Since 1992, the Department has participated in the construction of 1,047 units of affordable housing and the preservation of an additional 1,299 units renting below market prices that were in jeopardy of returning to full market rates. The Department is committed to constructing or preserving a minimum of 200 units of affordable housing each year.

Through unique programs such as the Family Self-Sufficiency Program, activities like the Gateway Family Literacy Program, participation in Camp Rosenbaum Youth Citizenship Camp in partnership with the Housing Authority of Portland, and other partnership activities, the Department of Housing Services continues its mission to promote self-sufficiency, preserve dignity, and respect the individuals we serve
